The team who are competing at the championships

DCAS salutes Western Cape athletes attending the Summer National School Sport Championships

Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ricardo Mackenzie, has passed on his support and best wishes to the learners of Team Western Cape as they travel to represent the province in the 2025 Summer National School Sport Championship.

Held from 11-15 December in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, the event sees more than 960 learners from across all nine provinces come together to showcase their talent and hard work, competing in gymnastics, goalball, softball and table tennis.

Minister Mackenzie says he is supporting Team Western Cape all the way as they represent the aspirations of the province.

“I want to express my heartfelt pride in all our incredible athletes and coaches as you take the national stage. You are not only competing for medals; but you also carry with you the hopes, gees, and determination of our province,” he said.

“Each one of you earned your place at the Championship through discipline, perseverance and countless hours of training. That alone makes you champions.”

Our athletes were symbolically capped at a ceremony yesterday at the world-class Lavender Hill Shared Facility, and encouraged ahead of their departure.

Western Cape Minister of Education, David Maynier, wished the team well, saying: “Our Western Cape school sports teams have excelled on the national stage this year, and we look forward to celebrating some more great results with these talented learners!”

Talent identification and selection of our athletes has resulted from an exhaustive process, which took place at cluster, district, and provincial level. This has enabled the Western Cape to field strong, diverse, and highly motivated teams.

Minister Mackenzie added: “The Western Cape Government continues to invest in school sport as it provides safe spaces for young people to grow, thrive and pursue their dreams. Our young athletes are the future leaders and role models of our communities, and we are honoured to walk this journey alongside them.”

“These teams represent the best of our province’s youth sporting talent, and the hopes of their communities. As they represent all of us on the national stage, we wish them every success.”

Go Team Western Cape. Bring it home!
