Scouts Celebrate UN International Day of the Girl Child

11 October 2019

Since 2012, 11 October has been marked as the International Day of the Girl. The day aims to highlight and address the needs and challenges girls face, while promoting girls' empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights. The 2019 theme was GirlForce: Unscripted and Unstoppable. The following stories captured the Scouting in Schools experiences of two girl scouts.

This is what Nicole Dambakurima had to say about her Scouting in Schools experience:

Grade 5 Silukhanyo Primary School learner Nicole Dambakurima is a second generation Scouting member. She joined the Scouting-in-Schools programme earlier this year at the encouragement of her father Kenesias, who was a Scout in Zimbabwe when he was young.

"My father taught me that I need to keep my environment and our animals safe. He took us to the beach to clean up and helped us plant trees. I saw what a difference that makes. When I heard about Cubbing he encouraged me to join. I have learnt that I can save the animals in the sea by keeping my environment clean. People here don’t care and they have destroyed mother earth. We are a new generation and it’s up to us to save mother earth and so I must clean up my yard and our street. Also making Eco bricks helps. Today at our Cub meeting I got to make my own Eco brick and I’m very happy about it!

This is what Axole Majodina had to say about her Scouting in Schools experience:

Ten year old Axole Majodina attends Silukhanyo Primary School and lives in the disadvantaged community of Zola in Strand with her family. She saw her friends attend the Scouting-in-Schools Cub meetings and realised that Cubbing could help her achieve her dreams. “I saw that they learn lots of interesting things, play games and that the school work of the children in Cubs got better. I want to be a doctor or a teacher one day. I want to know how to treat my sister and so I also wanted to learn more.”

“My favourite thing in Cubbing is reading the compass so we can find the key to unlock the answer. I know how to find north and south and how to follow compass directions. I’m also happy to be in Cubbing with my friends because we are even better friends now.
