DCAS Supports Springboks while promoting After School Programmes

13 November 2019

While thousands of Capetonians lined the streets of the Cape Town CBD on Monday, 11 November 2019 to see the victorious Springboks parading the Rugby World Cup trophy, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) spread the message of the importance of After School programmes in developing sporting talent.

Chief Director Jacqueline Boulle and her team from the After School Programme office, together with Head of Department Brent Walters, formed part of the crowd holding up posters from their programme. These posters show rugby as a sport offered as part of After School Programmes, but speaks to the bigger life lessons learned while participating. The posters read “It’s not just Rugby. It’s a lesson in converting dreams into reality.” This is part of a series of posters that were produced by the team to be displayed in schools to encourage participation in After School Programmes.

The whole nation has been inspired by the story of Springbok captain Siya Kolisi, who faced difficult circumstances growing up, but still managed to rise above those challenges and become the Springbok captain. The After School Programme aims to close the gap between learners who have access to resources and those who don’t. They hope to contribute to the development of our future sporting stars through their programmes.

DCAS, through its After School Programmes, aims to keep learners safe but also to support them in getting access to opportunities to future success.
