Programme Background

The After School Game Changer (AS GC) is one of seven priority projects of the Western Cape Provincial Government. It focuses on increasing the opportunities for youth by providing quality After School Programmes for learners in no-and low-fee schools.  This includes academic support, sport, arts and life skills programmes. Through these programmes the initiative aims to reignite the flame of learning, improve educational outcomes, reduce school dropout and improve young people’s chances of becoming engaged and productive citizens.

There are over 900 After School Sites in the Western Cape operated by a number of partners: Government has a number of programmes run internally by departments; Government funds NGOs to deliver programmes; and NGOs self-fund to deliver programmes.

The Western Cape Government in partnership with ASSITEJ SA have come together as the Programme Convenors for the Creative Arts Training Programme for After School Practitioners to support Coaches delivering arts programmes.

About ASSITEJ SA

ASSITEJ South Africa is a network organisation that connects and supports theatre practitioners, theatre companies, arts institutions and schools across the country, who share a belief in the transformative difference that theatre and the arts makes in the lives of children and young people.

ASSITEJ SA focuses on: creating access to theatre for young people, supporting and developing emerging and established artists, empowering arts’ education through the training of artists and educators who work with children and young people and connecting and advocating for the arts in the lives of young people.

Programme Design and Objectives

This is a one-year part-time programme for in-service After School Practitioners that supports them to deliver quality arts engagements to children and young people, with a focus on theatre/drama and dance.  The programme is intended to provide skills development, mentoring support and showcasing opportunities for Arts Coaches. ASSITEJ SA works with a range of facilitators and members to deliver the programme across the Western Cape

The programme will follow the following stages of engagement:

  1. First visitation –  Getting to know you, your strengths and challenges. (Term 1)
  2. Zabalaza Festival – Three-day residential programme containing exposure to the arts, critical thinking about the arts, and building a base in arts-based facilitation skills. (March)
  3. Skills training – Four-day intensive residential programme designed to develop skills in facilitating for drama and dance specialisations, as well as in musical theatre. Developing skills and creativity. (April holiday)
  4. Second visitation - Onsite mentoring, training and support. (Term 2)
  5. Specialist workshops in different aspects of dance/drama provided on a regional basis. (Terms 2 and 3, as possible)
  6. Local/Community-based Showcasing of dance and/or drama performances for input and mentoring. Coaches will be expected to work with other coaches in their district to create Showcases where these do not exist. (Terms 3 and 4)
