We are pleased to have been given the opportunity to host this bi-annual Summit. We have just hosted a highly successful 2010 FIFA World Cup, which has demonstrated what we as a province and country can be, if we work together and all give our best. We believe the Regional Leaders' Summit provides yet another opportunity to welcome international visitors and to show the rest of the world what the Western Cape has to offer as an investment, business and tourist destination. I have full confidence that that this year's Summit will build on the many successes of the 2008 Summit hosted by the Shandong province in Jinan. It will provide the seven participating regions namely, Upper Austria, Quebec, Bavaria, Shandong, Georgia, Sao Paulo and the Western Cape with the opportunity to share ideas on how to empower and improve the lives the people living in these regions. The Summit will also provide a platform for both the public and the private sector to engage on important issues that affect all of us including, food security, renewable energy and public transport. We will also discuss and explore new ways to remain competitive in the globalised economy in the future. The Summit will also further strengthen our cultural, social, economic and political partnerships with one another and will result in increased trade and investment between our regions. I encourage all of you to browse our website in order to read about the many opportunities the Summit has to offer when it comes to fulfilling our vision of creating poverty-free societies in each of our regions. We look forward to hosting all of you for fruitful discussions and deliberations in September.
