Western Cape gets R26 million towards housing and doctors

4 March 2015

The Western Cape Government received an additional R26 million from national Treasury to spend on human settlements and health.

Finance Minister Ivan Meyer tabled the Western Cape Additional Adjustment Appropriation Bill for the 2014/2015 financial year during a sitting of the provincial legislature on 26 February.

Meyer said that the allocation of additional funds to the province was an expression of confidence in the ability of the Western Cape government to not only spend, but to do so efficiently, economically and effectively.

He said that the R26 million allocated to the province was part of processes at national government level to re-allocate funds derived from unspent national conditional grants originally allocated to other provinces.

With an additional allocation of R6.956 million to the Department of Health, the department will use the funds to assist the implementation of the general practitioner contracting project, which is a pilot project in Plettenberg Bay (Eden District).

The provincial Human Settlements department will be allocated R20 million.
