Twenty-two Arrested for Drinking and Driving This Weekend

On 20 and 21 February 2015, 25 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape saw a total of 2 145 vehicles stopped as part of Provincial Traffic Services safety campaign. Fifteen people, nine of whom were pedestrians, died on the province’s roads.

A total of 1 419 drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in 22 arrests.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Mossel Bay at 0.92 mg/1 000 ml, which was three times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000 ml.

A total of 6 042 vehicles were screened for speeding of which 582 speeding offences were recorded.  A total of 181 fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R 215 100.

Highest Speeds Recorded

  • 174 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Brackenfell service area.
  • 157 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N1 in the Worcester service area.
  • 113 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the N7 in the Vredendal service area.

Six Other Arrests

  • 1 x Dagga arrest (Somerset West).
  • 1 x Reckless and negligent arrest (Beaufort West).
  • 1 x Unlicensed firearm arrest (Somerset West).
  • 2 x Reckless and negligent arrest (Somerset West).
  • 1 x Speed arrest (Swellendam).
