Sport Touches Young Women’s Lives on Youth Day

17 June 2014

The Provincial Women and Girls’ Committee of the Western Cape Sport Confederation hosted a Youth Day celebration at the Lentegeur Special School in Mitchells Plain on 16 June 2014. The event was supported by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) and others.

The multi-code sports event mainly focused on women and girls’ sport development, while it also reached out to athletes from the disability sport sector and youth at risk. Teams from Mitchells Plain, Strand, Khayelitsha, Gugulethu, Kuils River and Ravensmead participated in the event.

JP Naude of the Western Province Sports Council delivered a message of encouragement. “It’s important to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in 1976 so that we can celebrate Youth Day today.”

Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo said the Youth Day celebrations demonstrated how sport can be a powerful way of combating social ills within our communities and providing support for youth to excel, despite the many challenges they face on a daily basis.

Women’s sevens rugby player Chadé Segals from Kraaifontein enjoyed playing the game she loves. “Today’s event showed that women can also compete in fun-filled sport and be acknowledged for our achievements”.

These varieties of sport were more accessible and enjoyable to everyone on the day.
