Safer Roads for All at St Michael's Primary

On 22 August 2014, the Department of Transport and Public Works partnered with the Theewaterskloof Municipality to teach Grade 1, 2 and 3 learners the importance of obeying road signs when walking to St Michael’s Primary School in Grabouw.

The road safety awareness event formed part of Long Short Walk, a global road safety campaign, and focused on how to use the road safely.

Traffic officials explained basic road safety tips to learners and the Department’s Road Safety Management component handed out promotional items. Wearing reflective sashes, the group of learners and their teachers walked to the N2 highway where they were taught how to cross safely.

Principal Rehard Smith says many learners cross the N2 highway daily on their way to school. “They don’t always know how to use it safely. This intervention was important because it educates learners to cross roads safely, to listen and respond to the actions of oncoming motorists,” he said.

The Department and its partners are committed to assist primary schools in the Western Cape in making a difference by potentially saving lives.
