Road Safety during the Saldanha Drags Weekend

28 November 2014

The annual Saldanha Drags event taking place at the Saldanha Airstrip on 28 and 29 November 2014 will be filled with excitement for drag racing enthusiasts. At the same time, the expected increase in traffic can be a time of danger for road users.

Some motorists may be tempted to speed in the rush to get to the event and to go back home. After watching high speed racing, they may want to race against each other on public roads. High speeds significantly increase the risk of a crash. Speedsters on the West Coast road will be caught through ASOD (average speed over distance) law enforcement equipment.

The ASOD system has already significantly reduced speeding on Western Cape roads. Provincial traffic officers will be on high alert and will be showing zero tolerance for any breach of traffic safety laws. Roadblocks will be set up where motorists least expect them.

The Department of Transport and Public Works encourages road users to be extra careful.

  • Always obey the rules of the road -– they are there for good reasons.
  • Be on the lookout for pedestrians.
  • Drive more slowly and be more careful.
  • Always buckle up, front and back.
  • Don’t drink and drive - find a safer way to get home.
  • A speeding fine will cost you money; an accident could cost a life.
