Promoting Sport Initiatives Between Western Cape and Shandong

3 May 2013

A delegation from the Western Cape, including the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) and sport federations, will visit Shandong Province in the People’s Republic of China from 4 –11 May 2013 to strengthen the sports partnership between the two provinces.

The Western Cape and Shandong are in the process of establishing possible joint projects to improve sport through the design and implementation of high performance systems. The process started late last year when a delegation from Shandong visited DCAS in Cape Town.

DCAS has identified four possible areas where the Western Cape can learn from Shandong: sport academies and focus schools; coaching and training; talent identification programmes and sports facilities.

Effective sports development structures are one of the key reasons for the success of the People’s Republic of China in major international events such as the Commonwealth and Olympic/Paralympic Games. The visit to Shandong is an opportunity for the exchange of knowledge and expertise in order to promote sport development in the two provinces.

Premier Helen Zille is expected to lead a Western Cape delegation to Shandong from 29 June–10 July 2013. The commitment to strengthening the development of active and winning provinces is something that the Western Cape takes pride in, “better together”.

Mutually beneficial partnerships such as these provide valuable opportunities for athletes to develop their skills so that they may compete on the international stage.
