Nineteen Die on Western Cape Roads

Nineteen people died on Western Cape roads this weekend. Seven of them were pedestrians, seven drivers of vehicles, four were passengers and one was a motorcyclist.

This weekend’s (17 and 18 October 2014) 26 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape saw a total of 2 453 vehicles stopped as part of Provincial Traffic Services safety campaign.

A total of 1 598 drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in 43 arrests.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Somerset West at 1.29 mg/1 000 ml, which was five times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000 ml.

Four thousand and eighty five (4 085) vehicles were screened for speeding of which 388 speeding offences were recorded.  Two hundred (200) fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R 213 450.

Highest Speeds Recorded

  • 168 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Brackenfell service area.
  • 158 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N1 in the Swellendam service area.
  • 92 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the N2 in the Beaufort West area.
  • 93 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on the N2 in the Oudtshoorn area.

Six Other Arrests

  • 1 x False Documentation Arrest (Vredendal).
  • 1 x Dagga Arrest (Swellendam).
  • 1 x Excessive Speed Arrest (Swellendam).
  • 1 x Assault and Intimidating an Officer Arrest (Brackenfell).
  • 2 x Riotous Behaviour Arrest (Knysna).

  • Oudtshoorn – 1 x Driver
  • Knysna – 1 Pedestrian

Winelands/Overberg:

  • Paarl – 1 x Driver
  • Wellington – 1 x Driver
  • Worcester – 1 x Motorcyclist
  • De Doorns – 1 x Pedestrian
  • Villiersdorp – 1 x Driver and 2 x Passengers
  • Malmesbury – 1 x Passenger
