Minister Donald Grant to Attend Schools Road Safety Debate Competition

Seven high schools from across the Western Cape will be competing for top honours in the Participatory Education Techniques (PET) provincial competition at the Gene Louw Traffic College (GLTC) in Brackenfell on 23 August 2014. The competition will be hosted by the Department of Transport and Public Works.

Teams comprise five learners who are in Grade 10 and 11 from the following schools:

  • Noorder Paarl High School.
  • Groenberg Secondary School.
  • Hawston Secondary School.
  • Bardale Secondary School.
  • Hindle Road Secondary School.
  • Parkdene Secondary School.
  • Percy Mdala High School.

The PET competition is held annually to:

  • Encourage learners to be aware of road safety matters in their communities.
  • Empower learners, facilitators and community road safety councils with practical research skills.
  • Teach learners to take apply the road safety rules that affect their communities.
  • Develop and enhance the learners’ presentation skills through practical sessions.
  • Promote teamwork and participation by using participative techniques.
  • Inculcate accountability, versatility and discipline in learners.

Teams will be expected to identify road safety problems affecting their schools or communities, and then formulate solutions to each problem using the three Es:

  • Education.
  • Engineering.
  • Enforcement. 

This will be in the form of verbal and written presentations, followed by a traffic model display.

The winning school will be representing the Western Cape at the National PET competition to be held in the Free State province on 27 September 2014.

Through the PET competition, the department creates opportunities for learners to improve road safety in their communities.
