29 August 2014

On Saturday, 30 August 2014, Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, will be opening the Provincial Golden Games of 2014.

The Golden Games are a programme pioneered by the national Department of Sport and Recreation (SRSA), rolled out by the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) in collaboration with Western Cape Older Person Forum and Age in Action.

These games are a unique opportunity for older persons over the age of 60 to participate in sporting activities in an effort to keep active and healthy.

Sport codes include athletics, soccer, brisk walking and passing the ball, among others.

DCAS has been supporting this initiative since it started in 2006.

The provincial tournament that will be taking place on Saturday is the qualifier phase, where those who excel will go on to represent the Western Cape at the National Golden Games in Mpumalanga later this year.

Minister Mbombo will be delivering the keynote address and motivating those who will form part of Team Western Cape to represent us well at nationals.

The Golden Games form part of the Western Cape Government’s goal of creating a winning and healthy nation.
