Launch of the 2014 Western Cape Farm Worker of the Year Competition

9 April 2014

The 2014 Western Cape Farm Worker of the Year Competition will again be hosted by the Western Cape Department of Agriculture and Shoprite.

This year will see more than 1 000 entrants from 16 regions compete in categories ranging from general worker to middle management. The overall winner will be announced at a gala event in November, and will receive prizes to the value of R100 000.

This competition is unique and gives recognition to the very important social and economic role farm workers play in the South African context. The competition is the flagship event of the Western Cape Department of Agriculture’s Farm Worker Development Programme, and has an annual budget of R1.5 million.

Gerrit van Rensburg, Western Cape Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development and Johan van Deventer, the General Manager of Freshmark, Shoprite Checkers’ fresh produce procurement division, will launch the 2014 competition.
