The purpose of the Govan Mbeki Awards is to promote and inculcate a culture of excellence within the Human Settlements sector in the delivery of quality Human Settlements. Human Settlements plays an important role in redressing some of the imbalances of apartheid spatial development, and providing dignity and land ownership to many South African citizens.

In addressing these patterns of spatial development, the awards takes into account the unique needs and potential of different rural and urban areas in the context of emerging development corridors in the Southern African sub-region.
