DCAS launches Steelpan programme

1 September 2014

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) launched its Steelpan programme at Weston High School in Vredenburg on 22 August 2014. The hall was jam-packed with enthusiastic learners from surrounding schools. Dancing and singing echoed through the venue, setting a lively tone for the occasion. Exceptional entertainers from the local community contributed to festivities.

A steelpan is a kind of gong that originated in the Caribbean. The programme teaches drumming and “panning” to learners and unemployed youth on the West Coast. Through its Steelpan programme and other cultural initiatives, DCAS is bringing the youth and community together to bring hope and change for the better to the different regions of the Western Cape.
