Club Development Teams Shine at Spar Challenge

23 June 2014

Four netball teams from the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) Club Development Programme were in action at the Spar Challenge in Bellville on 20 and 21 June 2014.

It was an amazing experience for these teams to perform in front of a big crowd when they squared off in curtain raisers to the second and third test match between South Africa and Scotland.

The national team subsequently became the highest ranked African team by winning a 3 – 0 whitewash series. DCAS also provided free transport for spectators from these communities to see our national side live in action.

On the pitch, the development teams played like champions and made their communities proud. Weltevrede (from Mitchells Plain) won 7 – 3 against Young Sisters (Gugulethu), while Hamlets (Mamre) defeated Star Lights netball club 9 – 7. Vultures (Khayelitsha) lost 32 – 24 against a dominating University of Cape Town (UCT) A team.

“It was our desire to nurture the enthusiasm of the Western Cape netball community and public through this event by continuing to provide a stage to inspire and encourage participation in netball, especially to our youth,” said Marsha Wagenaar of Western Province Netball Union (WPNU).

It was a competitive, enjoyable and exciting netball challenge for development teams. Shenaaz April, captain of Weltevrede, said although they didn’t appear on television, it was still an unforgettable moment for the team. “To play on the same court as the national team was an inspiration to us.”

The partnership between Netball South Africa, WPNU and DCAS created a platform for development players to showcase their talent on the national stage. Such exposure brings out the best in players, strengthens team play and motivates players to dream big.
