Celebrating Netball Excellence in Mfuleni on Youth Day

17 June 2014

Youth netball players from 11 competing teams showed their passion for the sport with some eye-catching displays of skill, at the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) Youth Day netball tournament in Mfuleni on 16 June 2014.

The tournament saw some of the best local youth netball teams in action. Tough battles on the court, together with the jubilant chants by spectators cheering for their teams, created a lively atmosphere on the day. Victory Girls defeated Mfuleni Heroes 15 – 8 to win the tournament.

Winning netball teams received medals for their efforts, while each team received two balls from the DCAS Club Development Programme. Anathi Makapela of DCAS said the tournament was a success. “The youth were the ones who triumphed on the day. They showed that netball is alive and well in Mfuleni”.

Captain of the victorious Victory Girls team, Samantha Snuping, said the tournament was a platform for them to test their talent and skills. “It was not about winning, but rather about celebrating Youth Day through sport.”

This Youth Day netball tournament contributed to the DCAS vision of a “netball revolution” in the Western Cape, while celebrating netball excellence and promoting the sport in Cape Town.
