Celebrating a Life of a Legend - Nelson Mandela Day

Nelson Mandela Day 2014

On Friday, 18 July 2014 the world celebrates Mandela Day - a day dedicated to remind us of the sacrifice our former president, the late Nelson Mandela, made when he gave 67 years of his life, fighting for our human rights. It’s also a global call to action for people everywhere to dedicate at least 67 minutes of their time to an activity that helps make the world a better place.

This year, Mandela Day is particularly symbolic. Not only does the year 2014 mark South Africa’s 20 years of democratic freedom, but it’s also the first year the world will commemorate Mandela Day since his passing in 2013.

We asked a few people how they plan on spending their 67 minutes for Mandela and what his legacy means to them. This is what they had to say.

"I will be joining my family and friends in the Delft community donating clothes and food items to the needy in the area."

"I will be donating my 67 minutes at a Primay School in Port Elizabeth."
"It will be an emotional day for me because Mandela meant and still means a lot to me. I hope to spend the day at the Waterfront. I like to visit his statue and reflect on his life and legacy."
"I've recently visited Robben Island for the first time and it was an amazing experience. Nelson Mandela sacrificed so much for the people of South Africa. To see what he went through for our freedom was life-changing." "I won't be doing anything specific on the day, but when I visited Robben Island I heard an interesting quote 'each one, teach one'. I think it's important to give back, even if you teach someone something, be it your friend, neighbour or stranger."

If you would like to volunteer your time this Mandela Day, but not sure how or where, the Western Cape Government planned several activities around the province for you to get involved.
