All-women Volvo Yacht Race Team Welcomed in Cape Town

7 November 2014

Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, welcomed Team SCA on its arrival this afternoon at Jetty 2, V&A Waterfront, Cape Town.

Team SCA is the first all-female crew to enter the Volvo Ocean Race in more than a decade. The team is competing against veterans and beginners from all around the world.  The Race started in Spain on 4 October 2014 and will finish in Sweden in June 2015 with stopovers at various ports around the world. Cape Town is the very first stopover.

This morning SCA Team tweeted “it’s life at the extreme out here coming into Cape Town!” Up-to-date technology makes it possible for them to share their amazing story with the world through daily blogs, images and videos. Their race blogs show they are all extremely focused: “on board, it is all about today, not tomorrow, nor the next day”.

Minister Mbombo proudly welcomed the all-female crew of 14 in the toughest race in professional sailing and said that this is a perfect example of teamwork. Each crew member must know precisely what she has to do and when.

“My Department provides support for women to excel in sport, despite the many challenges they face in the sporting arena. The presence of women in sport is a powerful way of combating social ills within our communities. May women continue to reach their goals so that we can build an equal society BETTER TOGETHER” said Dr Mbombo.
