83 Year Old Beneficiary Receives House in Delft

12 December 2014

83 year old Mrs. Aletta Losper today became the proud owner of a new house in the 1966 unit Delft Precinct 3 and 5 Housing Project in Delft, Cape Town, today when she received the keys to her new home from the Western Cape Minister of Human Settlements Bonginkosi Madikizela.

Mrs Losper has been on the waiting list since 1996 and said “I have been sharing a bedroom with my five kids and I never had my own privacy, but today is an end to that and I’m for ever grateful to Mr Madikizela. This is the best Christmas gift I could have hoped for”. She couldn’t contain the joy and happiness as she was handed over the house key by Minister Madikizela.

Mrs Losper’s  42m2  house consists of two bedrooms, a bathroom and living area with a kitchen. She is representative of the Department’s strategic focus to prioritize the elderly and the most vulnerable in the provision of housing opportunities, where due to the limited supply of housing opportunities available it’s essential that the most vulnerable are assisted first.

“I am very happy that people like Mrs Losper can receive houses” said Minister Madikizela. “Receiving a house is more than just a roof over your head; it’s about restoring dignity to those who have had difficult lives and suffered in the past.”

The units of the Delft 3 and 5 Project are built using Alternate Building Technology (ABT) and represent the Department’s commitment to introducing energy efficiency building standards into the housing construction sector. The project tender specifically called for the units to be made out of energy efficient materials that can help keep the houses cool in summer and warm in winter, thus saving on the heating and electricity costs.  When completed, the project will deliver 1911 houses for able bodied beneficiaries, and 55 houses for special needs beneficiaries. The expected date of completion is June 2015, and to date, 272 beneficiaries have been moved into their completed houses.

Mrs Losper will also soon be receiving a title deed to her new house, ensuring she is recognized as its rightful owner and that no one will be able to take it away from her or claim otherwise.

Minister Madikizela said “With the title deed she will enjoy all the rights and benefits of a home owner and the house will become an asset for her and her family in generations to come. With the house she can create wealth and leverage it to get finance and to open other doors for herself or her family.”
