The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport Honours Our Sport Legends

15 November 2013
The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) avails the opportunity to honour legends, heroes and icons who have uncompromisingly contributed to the development, transformation and growth of sport in South Africa and, more specifically, in the Western Cape.

The department will be hosting its seventh annual Sport Legends Ceremony on 13 December 2013.

In October nominations were made for sports heroes and heroines who comply with the following criteria:
  • Nominees should be 50 years or older and should preferably be in retirement, except in exceptional cases where the qualifications of the candidate are indisputable.
  • Representivity in terms of gender, demography, geography and a lifetime of service to the code.
  • People who gave sport their all and who played a role in the transformation of sport before 1994.
The department is proud to acknowledge people who gave sport their all and who played a key role in developing sport in their communities.

To date, about 244 sport legends have been honoured.
A total of 37 sport legends were crowned at this year's Sport Legends Awards held in Paarl.
