Fourteen people, 11 of them pedestrians were killed on Western Cape roads this past weekend. Seven of the 11 pedestrians died within the Cape Town Metropolitan area, one in the Southern Cape, one in the Winelands/Overberg region and two on the West Coast.
Two motor vehicle drivers and one passenger were killed in separate incidents.
On 31 October and 1 November, 26 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape saw a total of 2 273 vehicles stopped as part of Provincial Traffic Services safety campaign.
A total of 1 248 drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in 25 arrests.
The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Worcester at 1.26 mg/1 000ml, which was five times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000ml.
A total of 527 vehicles were screened for speeding of which 120 speeding offences were recorded. Two hundred and sixty nine (269) fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R 406 450.
