Media Alert: Law Enforcement Officers Recover Unlicensed Firearm, Arrest Suspect

17 January 2011

Law enforcement officers arrested a man in Sunset Beach on 17 January for possession of an unlicensed firearm and also recovered the weapon. It was later established that the weapon comes from Gauteng Province.

The officers spotted the man illegally building a structure next to the R27 in Sunset Beach. When they asked him to break down the structure, one of the officers spotted a firearm sticking out under the man's shirt.

The officers swiftly removed the firearm and upon questioning the man, established that he had no licence for the weapon. He was arrested and taken to the Table View Police Station, where he was charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm. The suspect is still due to appear in court.

Further investigation revealed that the firearm comes from Krugersdorp in Gauteng, but it is not yet clear whether the weapon has been stolen. South African Police Services (SAPS) will take the investigation further.

"This incident shows that alertness and effective response does reap rewards. With the support of our communities we can even achieve more," said Neil Arendse, spokesperson for the City's Law Enforcement Department.
