Mayor Proud of Latest Blue Flag Control Check Results

3 February 2011

The latest control check reports conducted by the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) confirmed that the City of Cape Town's Blue Flag beaches are fully compliant with Blue Flag standards.

The organisation's Blue Flag manager went on to say that Cape Town's beaches are considered the benchmark when assessing Blue Flag beaches across the country.

"I am thrilled that our Blue Flag beaches continue to meet international standards of excellence. This was confirmed recently when Cape Town was hailed by the popular travel website, Lonely Planet, as the second best beach in the world. Trip advisor also toasted the city's accommodation providers in its 2011 Travellers Choice Awards," said City of Cape Town Executive Mayor, Alderman Dan Plato.

The beaches were specially commended for the ablution upgrades that have taken place on various beaches and for the excellent safety and control exhibited during the busy festive period.

"I would like to commend all of the staff who dedicated their holidays - sometimes at great sacrifice - to maintain the City's beaches and facilities and ensure that they were safe and secure this festive season," said the City's Director for Sport, Recreation and Amenities, Gert Bam.
