Killing of 5-year-old in Bredasdorp Condemned – Community must assist SAPS

3 February 2015

Statement by Dan Plato, Western Cape Minister of Community Safety

It is with great sadness that I have learned of the murder of a five-year-old girl in Bredasdorp.

I condemn this heinous act and call on the community to assist the police wherever possible to ensure justice is served.

My deepest condolences go to the family and friends of five-year-old Kayde Williams in Bredasdorp during this difficult time.

I trust that the police are busy with a full investigation and I urge the community to assist the police with any and all information which could help lead to an arrest of those responsible for such a heinous crime.

Two years after the brutal murder of Anene Booysen and a mere two months since the 16 Days of No Violence Against Women and Children campaign, honoured nationally, the community of Bredasdorp is facing another tragedy.

The situation is untenable. As a society, we cannot continue to fail the most vulnerable of our communities.

Parents have a responsibility to ensure the safety of their children but safety is everyone’s responsibility and we must all be vigilant to protect our women and children throughout the year, not just for 16 days over November and December.

My department and I will monitor the progress of the investigation to help ensure that the crime committed against little Kayde does not go unpunished.
