New R62 million Bonnievale Primary School project begins

22 July 2016

Donald Grant, Minister of Transport and Public Works attended a sod-turning ceremony on 22 July 2016 where the new R62 million Bonnievale Primary School is to be built.

The project was commissioned by the Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) for the Western Cape Education Department to replace the existing school on the site. Construction started last month and is expected to be complete in October 2017.

The project will be implemented in two phases. Phase 1 is the erection of temporary classrooms on Langeberg Municipality land so that teaching and learning can continue while construction is in progress. Phase 2 is the demolition of the old school and the building of a new school in its place.

The new building will comprise a framed concrete structure and mixture of face brick and painted infill walls. The classroom blocks and administration building are double-storey single-bank sections with covered open passages and concrete-framed masonry.

Teaching facilities will comprise:

  • 32 standard classrooms for 40 learners each,
  • 4 Grade R classrooms for 30 learners each, and
  • 3 multi-purpose classrooms for library and computer services, arts and culture activities, and handwork.

All classrooms will enjoy a lot of natural light and be well-ventilated. The complex will also have a hall with toilet facilities, an administrative building, and facilities for a supervisor.

“This primary school will improve the quality of teaching and learning and be a place where Bonnievale learners, educators and parents feel safe and secure”, said Minister Grant at the event.
