Scholarships for Postgraduate Language Study in 2006
DESCRIPTION:
The Western Cape Provincial Language Committee is established in terms of the Western Cape Provincial Languages Act. In terms of the Act, the Committee may initiate studies and research directed at empowering the people of the Western Cape through language, enhancing human dignity through respect for the three official languages, Afrikaans, English and Xhosa, and promoting multilingualism.

The Language Committee monitors the use of all three official languages in the province and supports the development of the previously marginalised languages of the Western Cape. The scholarships are designed to build up a body of well-qualified language experts in the province.

The Western Cape Provincial Language Committee invites suitably qualified residents of the Western Cape to apply for scholarships to undertake postgraduate study focusing any of the three official languages of the province, South African Sign Language, or a marginalised indigenous language of the province.

Three bursaries of R10 000 will be awarded. Part-time as well as full-time students are eligible. In the case of part-time students the amount will be divided in two and paid out over two years.

The closing date for applications is 1 November 2005.

Applicants must:
  • Qualify for admission to the postgraduate programme of his or her choice at a South African university or technikon.
