Funding for NGOs Offering HIV/Aids Services
DESCRIPTION:
Non-profit and non-governmental organisations that provide HIV/Aids-related services can apply for funding from the provincial Department of Social Development.

1. WHO CAN APPLY FOR FUNDING?

An organisation is eligible for funding if it is registered as a non-profit organisation in terms of the Nonprofit Organisations Act (Act 71 of 1997).

2. WHAT KIND OF HIV/AIDS-RELATED SERVICES GET FUNDING?

The HIV/Aids-related services funded generally fall into the following categories:

  1. Awareness and prevention campaigns
  2. Home-based care programmes and services

3. WHEN TO APPLICATIONS OPEN?

Applications for funding are considered once a year. Applications open in January. The deadline is usually end February.

Keep an eye out for calls for applications in local newspapers and communications from organisations such as the Networking Aids Community of South Africa (NACOSA) for details.

4. WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE WHEN APPLYING FOR FUNDING?

  1. Call for applications Applications open in January each year.
  2. Receipt of applications Send your application to the District Office nearest you by the application deadline, usually end February.
  3. Pre-assessment The HIV/Aids Co-ordinator at each District Office will pre-assess applications and make a recommendation to a district committee and manager. The District Manager will escalate suitable applications to the Regional Co-Ordinator.
  4. Presentation to Head Office The Regional Co-Ordinator will review the applications and present them to a selection panel at head office in Cape Town in March.
  5. Approval/Rejection of Funding The Regional Co-ordinator will contact successful NGOs and NPOs after March.

5. WHAT IF MORE FUNDING IS NEEDED DURING THE YEAR?

The Department does not provide ad hoc funding throughout the year. However, if it sees that a funded NGO/NPO is in need of training, materials or similar support, it will contract another NGO or private-sector company to run a short-term capacity-building programme.
