The Public Works Community Based Programs Branch has contracted with First Auto to employ unemployed people in both rural and urban communities near to government facilities to clean government vehicles on a regular basis. The project started as a pilot in Worcester in November 2002 and was initiated in George and Paarl in May 2003. The car cleaners are engaged by First Auto for a period of 12 months. After this period, the intention is to involve other participants, however, this will be reviewed as the need arises in a particular area. The car cleaners are employed by First Auto and are paid per car that they clean. The Public Works Community Based Programs Branch, in conjunction with private companies, supplies the merchants with cleaning starter kits. |
