The Ukuthwalana Training Programme was piloted in 2003 and provides training to young people in the areas of community development, entrepreneurship and marketing, computer literacy, cultural history and diversity, and life skills. It is specifically aimed at people who were previously marginalised (e.g. people who were in correctional services, foster care or drug rehabilitation) but are looking to start a new life. The programme is funded by the provincial Department of Social Development. Selection criteria One hundred trainees are selected each year to take part in the programme. The candidates are drawn from the database of young people who are registered with - or do volunteer work for - the various Youth Focal Units (or, in areas where there are no units, with the Social Development District Offices) in the province. Trainees must:
- Be between the ages of 18 and 30
- Have completed Grade 9, but out of school at least five years
- Be unemployed (preferably those who could not obtain a permanent job)
- Be from a poverty-stricken community, preferably from rural and informal settlements
- Be residing in the Western Cape
Course duration Eleven monthsCosts covered Tuition, accommodation and food. Transport to and from the trainee's home is provided over the holidays. Personal costs (such as clothing, bedding, stationery and toiletries) are from the trainee's own pocket. |
