Remarks at the Reception to Mark the Synergos Global Foundation Leaders Meeting 2005
BY: Mr Ebrahim Rasool, Premier of the Western Cape
AT: Western Cape
24 May 2005

We recently marked our first ten years of democracy in South Africa. And I myself have recently completed my first year as Premier of the province, after the first ANC-led government in the Western Cape took the lead in the election. This gives us the opportunity not only to come to grips with problems in the Western Cape, but to begin to come up with practical and workable solutions.

It also gives us a real opportunity to build the kind of partnerships we need at all levels - the global and the local, the international and the national, with individuals and with organisations. I have been struck at the enormous amount of goodwill there is towards South Africa, and how much the outside world wants us to succeed. I have also been moved by the warm response and support by so many of our fellow citizens in the Western Cape, who have embraced our vision of A Home for All in this province.

The concept of a Home for All was first expressed by Nobel Peace Laureate, Chief Albert Luthuli half a century ago. It is the simple yet alluring concept of a community of South Africans committed to common ends to be reached by collaborative means. Expressed another way, it is the clarion call of The Freedom Charter, which 50 years ago next month, proclaimed that 'South Africa belongs to all who live in it'.

It is a great sadness that the simple wisdom of this vision took so long to be heard and appreciated.

And it is a great happiness that we can now see those words begin to resonate in the hearts and minds of our citizens.

You are all most welcome. I hope you have an interesting and enjoyable week and that you get an opportunity, if you have any spare time, to have a look around and enjoy some of the sites for which our Home for All is famous.

Thank you for inviting me to greet you this evening, and good luck with your deliberations.
