 | What is the Olympic Games?
The first International Olympic Games was held in Athens in 1896. It was considered appropriate at the time to have Athens as the first host city, because Greece was the origin of the ancient Olympic Games. The Olympic Games is the most internationally inclusive sporting event, and is overseen by the International Olympic Committee. The games are hosted by a different city every four years, but have not been hosted by a city on the African continent yet. What is South Africa's History in the Olympic Games? South Africa first sent athletes to represent the country in the 1904 Olympic Games, hosted in St. Louis in the United States of America. In 1962, South Africa was banned from the Olympic Games because of the Apartheid system in place at the time. It was only in 1992 that South Africa was allowed to once again participate in the Games. |
Which Athletes are Representing South Africa in the 2012 Games? The London 2012 Games will see 125 South African athletes represent the country, 36 of whom come from the Western Cape. The opening ceremony takes place on Friday 27 July 2012.
