"In terms of national legislation, the City of Cape Town now requires all persons preparing building plans for Council approval to be registered with the South African Council for the Architectural Profession (SACAP)," says Cheryl Walters, Director: Town Planning.
Although the new provision came into being on June 30, the City delayed its implementation to allow for SACAP's processing of applications for registration.
"However as from this month, applicants will need to furnish their registration number on all the building plans and documents. Those who have made application and are still awaiting a response from the SACAP should produce a copy of the letter of acknowledgment," says Ms Walters.
"This new law only applies to building plans of an architectural nature. Plans of a non-architectural nature, such as the extension of a boundary wall or installation of a swimming pool will not be affected by the new rule," she added.
The City's Town Planning Department each year administers over 40 000 submissions of building plans across the entire Cape Metropole - stretching from Atlantis to Gordon's Bay.
