Accommodation for 680 victims of the Joe Slovo squatter campfires and other needy community members was created within a very short period of time.
Various buildings in the Tygerberg Hospital complex were renovated in two weeks to accommodate victims of the fires. The newly renovated complex will serve as transit accommodation while new houses are being built nearby. The management of Tygerberg Hospital also offered the use of their swimming pool and recreation facilities to the new inhabitants.

The provincial departments of Housing and Health and the City of Cape Town joined forces to bring about another success story in the Western Cape's drive to "build a home for all". "We had to stick to building regulations while overseeing the contractors' renovation of this old storage area. Kitchens and ablution areas were fitted and dormitory-type rooms had to be equipped with bunk beds" said Fanie van der Watt, a quantity surveyor working on the renovation.
