Local Government Elections will be held within months. The date is still to be announced. Only registered voters will be allowed to vote. In order to register as a voter, potential voters need to be in possession of a valid bar-coded identity document. In the greater Cape Town area it is estimated that +400 000 potential voters do not possess such a document.

The City of Cape Town has launched an intensive ID Campaign that will run from 18 April to 14 May 2005. To assist Capetonians to obtain these documents, the City is sponsoring ID applications and free photographs for bar coded ID books. This campaign will be run in cooperation with the Department of Home Affairs.

Twelve teams will hold 280 sessions, at more than 200 venues on specific dates, throughout the entire area of greater Cape Town. Adverts detailing dates, venues and times will be placed in community papers. This information is also available on the toll free number 0800 22 13 50. Councillor Gawa Samuels, Executive Deputy Mayor of the City of Cape Town, said "It is each and every citizen's right and civic duty to register as a voter and participate in the democratic process of our City by casting your vote in the forthcoming election. If you do not have a valid bar-coded ID book yet, I urge every Capetonian to make use of this offer of assistance. This is just another way that 'This City works for you' ".
