Literacy Initiatives: SANLI
DESCRIPTION:
In 2000, the national Department of Education launched the South African National Literacy Initiative (SANLI), which oversees the establishment of a voluntary service to reach our estimated 3,3 million illiterate adults.

SANLI caters for pre-ABET and ABET Level 1 learners and is part of the Tirisano programme. The campaign is run by volunteers who receive an honorarium.

All current and future ABET Level 1 learners must be enrolled as SANLI learners for the duration of the campaign. When they have completed the SANLI programme, learners can enrol for ABET Level 2 at a community learning centre registered with the Western Cape Education Department.

The curriculum gives learners access to primary and additional languages and numeracy. It also includes AIDS Education, Entrepreneurship, Human Rights Education and Voter Education. Classes are conducted in Afrikaans, English and Xhosa.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Learners can register at any Community Learning Centre (CLC).
