The Cape Town Metropolitan Police Department is different from the South African Police Service. Their emphasis is more on preventing crime and reducing the cause. The Cape Town Metro Police, work continuously to enforce traffic laws, by-laws and prevent crime.

Their current operational focus areas include addressing disorder in the city and clamping down on drug and alcohol-related offences.

The Cape Town Metro Police department work towards a transparent environment where all complaints are thoroughly investigated and outcomes are treated according to the law.


The following are just a few of the units that form part of the Cape Town Metropolitan Police Department:

Canine Unit 
The highly trained dog unit work alongside all law enforcement agencies to combat the illicit drug trade and keep Cape Town safe. The dogs  are trained to sniff out drugs, locate dropped or concealed objects during criminal incidents, follow tracks and chase criminals.

Strategic Surveillance Unit (SSU)
The SSU monitors 560 cameras throughout Cape Town, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The CCTV unit works closely with the Camera Response Unit and alerts its members when crime, traffic and by-law infractions, and fires are observed as well as supplying SAPS investigators with requested footage via a structured process.

Equestrian Unit 
The equestrian unit work within the city to combat crime in busy areas as well as at events.

Gang Unit 
The Gang Unit comprises of a group of specialised Metro Police officers who've been handpicked to work on gang-related safety issues. They solely focus on combating drug dealing and gangsterism in the Cape Flats, they:

  • identify gangs,
  • drug hot spots
  • build profiles of gangs and drug dealers
  • coordinate the execution of integrated search warrants,
  • obstruct gang and drug networks with road blocks,
  • participate in local drug action committees, and
  • contribute generally to restorative justice.

Tactical Response Unit
The Tactical Response Unit is a specialised team who respond to violent crime and focus on so-called "red zones" and crime hot spots.

Substance Abuse Enforcement Unit 
Working alongside all law enforcements agencies, the Substance Abuse Enforcement Unit helps combat the illicit drug trade.
