DESCRIPTION: |
![]() It is estimated that there are currently 30 000 unlicensed taverns or shebeens in operation in the Western Cape. The South African Breweries, as part of its transformation and broad based black economic empowerment objective launched the UKUSA Licensing initiative in 2004 as an intervention to encourage these tavern and shebeen owners to legalise and grow their businesses. This is in line with the objectives in the Proposed Liquor Policy for the Western Cape published in 2003. SAB provides aspirant license holders with extensive information at interactive workshops on the licensing process and requirements. This allows them to make an informed decision on the type of license they require and their suitability for a licence. The education process also includes discussions on the social aspects of alcohol and the need to operate a socially responsible business. SAB provides a consultancy and lodgment service free of charge with the applicant only having to cover the statutory costs, related to the application, as well as the costs of prescribed advertisements.. Once applicants have applied for a licence, the company provides them with business skills training to help them to grow their businesses. |
