Walking Bus Pilot Project
OBJECTIVE:
The project aims to provide safe walking routes through the Cape Town CBD to public transport access points. It also provides employment opportunities as part of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) programme.
START:
May 2007
END:
December 2007
STATUS:
Underway
DESCRIPTION:

Commuter surveys show that many people feel unsafe using public transport, particularly at stations and depots which are critical points of access to public transport.

The Walking Bus Pilot Project aims to address these safety concerns. The Walking Bus provides trained security escorts ("bus drivers") for commuters from different points ("bus stops") along their walking routes ("bus routes") to the Cape Town central train station.

The service is available from May to December 2007, between 15.00 and 19.00. Six walking, or "bus routes", are covered. A full timetable and route map is available.

Additional security personnel will also be deployed in the Cape Town station precinct area by Metrorail, the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Cape Town Partnership.
